Do You Log Your Food?



The number one rule I have for my nutrition clients is LOG YOUR FOOD. Whether I have a client on an macro plan or a meal plan, whether the goal is weight loss or gain or maintenance, I ask that they start logging their food.


When I ask new clients what their nutrition is like, the answer is almost always “I eat pretty clean”. Nobody is lying - Most of us genuinely THINK we eat “pretty clean”. Then we start food logging. 99% of the time, food logging reveals that we haven’t been eating as “clean” as we thought we were.


I notice that most people who complain about not being able to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight are reluctant to log their food intake.


A few common excuses:


TIME - I spend hours doing cardio, knowing cardio alone won’t make me lose weight, but I can’t take a few minutes every day to log my food which I know will help me develop the self-accountability I need and result in weight loss.


“IT’S TOO DIFFICULT” - Logging food is too difficult for me even though I’m a literate, functional adult.


KNOW IT ALL - I don’t need to log my food, I know what I’m eating - even though when asked to do a food recall, I can’t remember half the foods I ate during the last 24 hours and I haven’t lost weight in months.


I look at food logging as the guardrail that keeps you in a safe zone. If you know what you ate, you know what to expect when you step on the scale. A lot of people shy away from logging their food, because it’s a reality check - When you see that you drank 1,000 calories in soda, that’s too much reality. If there’s no record of what we ate and drank, then it didn’t really happen. We subconsciously know that logging our food will reveal that we eat more calories than we would like to think we do, so we resist it.


Bottom line: LOG YOUR DAMN FOOD!
